Ways I can support my mitochondrial Health

Mitochondria are organelles inside your cells and they have the big job of converting caloric energy from food into ATP energy.  You may have heard it called the powerhouse of the cell.   ATP energy is adenosine triphosphate and this is the energy you can use!  Because your body cannot store it, your mitochondria must work around the clock to keep your body moving. 

How do I know my mitochondria needs support:

Many diseases and signs of aging are signs of an impaired mitochondria.  Other symptoms of mitochondrial dysfunction can include; greying hair, intolerance to exercise, inflammation, brain fog, vision problems, chronic fatigue, sensitivity to light, difficulty staying asleep or falling asleep, difficulty regulating your body temperature, frequent illness, depression or anxiety. 

Limiting Exposure:

You can support these fragile structures by limiting your exposure to things that cause mitochondrial harm or DNA damage.  Sugar, oils, processed foods, chemicals, smoking, air pollution, medication, pesticides and sunburn are all destructive to your mitochondria.

Nutritional wealth:

If calories are “fuel” for your cellular engine then vitamins and minerals are the spark plugs, oil, fuel line and everything needed to burn that fuel.  So, that is why eating a poor diet of empty calories, fast food and high sugar only leads to weight gain and lethargy.  Your body needs the right fuel to make it run.  You can support a healthy metabolism and feed your mitochondria by eating a diet rich in colorful, nutrient dense whole foods.  A healthy mitochondria means a healthy metabolism which means healthy energy levels, healthy body weight and tissues. 

Ways I can support my mitochondrial health:

·         Eat whole foods full of B vitamins, antioxidants and minerals

·         Limiting your exposure to things that damage mitochondria

·         Move Daily with walking and weight training

·         Support your sleep by getting quality sleep each night to build mitochondria

·         Fasting supports mitochondria!  Try intermittent fasting or a bone broth fast to give the body time to recycle old and build new mitochondria.

·         Use an infrared sauna
